07-15-2009 12:07 pm As I write this, I'm on a plane home from Oklahoma City, the home of the NCAA Women's College World Series. Every team in the country begins the season with the goal of particpating in this prestigous event, but only eight teams earn that chance. Though only one team will go home with the prize, every team leaves with memories and lessons learned that will follow them long after their softball careers end. The journey begins in September as they begin preparation with tremendous enthusiasm and hope. Part of what makes some programs successful is having older players provide leadership and serving as role models for the rest of the team, though it's becoming harder these days to find young people willing to set a good example on and off the field. Leadership is a way of life! It takes a very special person to always make the right choices and give 100% when things are both good and bad. Every season has its highs and lows, as coaches and parents, we must get our athletes to understand the importance of emotional maturity and level-headedness. It's great to have a team that wins, but a much more important goal is to produce an environment where athletes can develop as leaders and make a real difference in the lives of others. As coaches and parents, it's our obligation to model these qualities ourselves and demand character before winning the game! Helping them onto this path of maturity and responsibility is the single best fit we can give a young person, whether they make it to the College World Series or not.
